resign in style – it’s a small world!
Hooray, you did it! The job is yours, now how to tell your current employer they are about to become your previous employer!?
It’s really simple! Be nice! Be respectful! Be smart!
This is not the time to settle old scores; there is no room for gloating. It’s a small world, so playing silly smug games after all the work you did to get to this point, will only come back and bite you on the ass.
The Resignation Meeting
Prepare for the meeting, be clear on what the notice period is, and provide details on what you’ve been working on including how you plan to hand it over. You want your boss to talk positively about you, remarking on how professional your handover was; it would be a shame to be remembered for how you left the organisation and not for how you contributed to it.
Most importantly, don’t forget how important a good reference is, potential employers are in particular very interested in the most recent employer.
Schedule your meeting giving thought to your employer’s schedule, trying to avoid high stress moments, such as first day back after the weekend. Your boss may be positive, congratulating you, but it’s possible that he takes it badly that you are leaving, so be prepared, having your reasons for leaving clear in your mind, remembering to remain polite and positive throughout. This is not personal.
Counter Offers
Prepare yourself for a counter offer, they are more and more common these days, a symptom of the war for talent. Try to stick to your guns, remembering why you decided to search for new opportunities in the first place. A lot of people at this point begin to falter, thinking, the extra money could be worth it and hey, better the devil you know, right?!
Try not to trap yourself in self doubt.
If you do receive a counter offer, get it in writing!! If you are still unsure please give your inretail Consultant a call, we’ve no doubt been there, so can guide you during this confusing time.
It’s yours now! Congratulations from the team at inretail, you did it!
